Do you hear metallic clangs, persistent whistles or ominous rumbles that transform your peaceful sanctuary of a home into an acoustic mystery? Your furnace, the silent workhorse that shields you from the biting winds in Mamaroneck, NY, has suddenly found its voice. These furnace noises aren't festive bells chiming; they're urgent messages from your heating system demanding immediate attention before the coldest nights arrive.

What's Behind the Banging and Clanging?

Metallic banging often signals delayed ignition, a condition where gas accumulates in the combustion chamber before igniting in a small explosion. The delayed ignition creates dangerous carbon monoxide risks and reduces heating efficiency by up to 30%.

Why Is Your Furnace Whistling or Squealing?

High-pitched whistles typically indicate airflow restrictions caused by clogged filters, closed vents or undersized ductwork. When your furnace struggles to pull air through blocked passages, pressure builds and escapes through small openings, creating that tea-kettle shriek. Squealing sounds usually point to worn blower motor bearings that need lubrication or replacement. Belt-driven blowers produce squealing when belts slip or fray, requiring immediate service before complete failure leaves you without heat.

When Should Rumbling Furnace Noises Concern You?

Rumbling furnace noises deserve immediate attention as they often indicate serious mechanical issues:

Dirty burners create uneven flame patterns and incomplete combustion.

Cracked heat exchangers allow exhaust gases into living spaces.

Failing blower motors struggle to circulate warm air efficiently.

Loose mounting hardware causes vibrations throughout the system.

Pilot light problems affect ignition sequences and safety controls.

Sediment buildup in oil furnaces reduces combustion efficiency significantly.

How Can Professional Service Silence the Furnace Noises?

Professional HVAC service technicians diagnose furnace noises through systematic inspections using specialized equipment. They measure gas pressure, test electrical connections, inspect heat exchangers with cameras and evaluate blower performance. Regular maintenance prevents 85% of furnace failures, saving Mamaroneck homeowners an average of $800 in emergency repairs annually. Service technicians also identify safety hazards before they escalate into dangerous situations requiring replacements.

When was the last time you thought about your home’s air ducts or dryer vent? In Mamaroneck, NY, where the seasons shift faster than a thermostat on a cold December night, clean air systems are a necessity. Scheduling professional air duct and dryer vent cleaning isn’t only about keeping your home tidy; it also protects your health, energy efficiency and safety.
Improve Indoor Air Quality to Breathe Cleaner Air

According to the EPA, indoor air can be two to five times more polluted than outdoor air. Over time, dust, dander and debris accumulate in your air ducts, circulating through your home whenever your HVAC system runs. Clean ducts mean cleaner air and a healthier environment for your family, especially for those with allergies or asthma. In Mamaroneck’s ever-changing climate, clean air ducts can make every breath count.

Boost Efficiency to Save Energy and Money

When your ducts or dryer vent are clogged, your systems work harder, wasting energy and driving up costs. The U.S. Department of Energy reports that 25-40% of heating and cooling energy is wasted due to contaminants in HVAC systems. Regular air duct cleaning helps your equipment run more efficiently, lowering utility bills and extending its life.

Prevent Hazards to Protect Your Home and Family

Lint buildup in dryer vents is a leading cause of household fires. The National Fire Protection Association estimates that nearly 15,000 dryer fires occur annually in the U.S. Regular dryer vent cleaning significantly reduces this risk. It’s a small investment for peace of mind, knowing your home and loved ones are protected from preventable dangers.

Enjoy Year-Round Comfort With Air Duct and Dryer Vent Cleaning

Scheduling regular air duct and dryer vent cleaning preserves your home’s comfort and safety throughout every season. Here are the benefits homeowners in Mamaroneck, NY, enjoy:

Enhanced air circulation and comfort.

Reduced allergens and airborne irritants.

Improved HVAC efficiency and lifespan.

Lower energy bills and maintenance costs.

Faster drying times for laundry.

Increased overall home safety and performance.

New countertops can instantly elevate your kitchen or bathroom, but without proper care, chips, cracks, and stains can shorten their beauty and lifespan. Whether you’ve chosen natural stone, engineered quartz, porcelain or concrete, safeguarding your investment ensures you enjoy long-lasting durability and design. If you live in Mamaroneck, NY, where life moves fast but style matters, knowing how to protect your surfaces is key.

Understand the Vulnerabilities of Different Materials

Natural stone like granite and marble may be stunning, but they can be porous and prone to staining if not sealed correctly. Engineered quartz, while non-porous, isn’t indestructible and can chip under impact. Porcelain offers impressive scratch resistance but may crack if struck hard. Concrete delivers an industrial charm, but without sealing, it can absorb liquids. By recognizing each surface’s strengths and weaknesses, you’ll know where to focus your care efforts.

Seal, Shield and Strengthen Your New Countertops

Regular sealing is critical for natural stone and concrete. Properly sealed stone is up to 90% more resistant to staining. Quartz and porcelain generally don’t need sealing, but protective mats and cutting boards help maintain their finish. Using trivets to block heat and coasters to prevent liquid rings will keep all countertop types in peak condition. Think of sealing and shielding as giving your new countertops a suit of armor.

Adopt Smart Daily Habits That Prevent Damage

Small actions can make a big difference in keeping surfaces flawless. Consider these proven practices:

Wipe spills immediately to prevent absorption and stains.

Use cutting boards instead of slicing directly on the surface.

Avoid placing hot pots or pans directly on countertops.

Clean with pH-balanced solutions to prevent surface wear.

Lift heavy appliances instead of dragging them across the surface.

Keep edges clear from impact zones where chips often occur.

Invest in Long-Term Protection and Maintenance

Professional care can extend the life of your countertops by years. In fact, research shows that properly maintained natural stone surfaces can last over 100 years. In Mamaroneck, NY, where style meets coastal living, don’t let salty air and daily wear dull your investment. Partnering with trusted experts ensures proper sealing, polishing and care that prevent stains and structural issues.

Is your White Plains, NY, home feeling a little stuffy or less energy-efficient than usual? Dust, allergens and debris can silently accumulate in your HVAC system, reducing comfort, increasing energy bills and affecting your overall health. Understanding when and why to schedule duct cleaning can make a noticeable difference in your home environment and give your HVAC system an energy-efficient boost as it operates through the summer.

Why Duct Cleaning Matters for Efficiency

Dirty air ducts force your HVAC system to work harder. As a result, it consumes more energy, increasing your cooling and heating bills. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, clean ducts can improve HVAC efficiency by up to 20 percent. In White Plains, NY, where seasonal temperature swings are common, maintaining a clean duct system ensures your home remains comfortable while keeping energy costs in check.

Health Benefits That Go Beyond Clean Air

Airborne pollutants trapped in ducts, including dust mites, microbes and pet dander, can trigger allergies and respiratory issues. Regular duct cleaning helps reduce these irritants, promoting a healthier indoor environment. The Environmental Protection Agency emphasizes that improving indoor air quality can significantly reduce the risks of asthma and other respiratory conditions. Breathing cleaner indoor air is critical to your health.

Signs Your Home Needs a Duct Cleaning

Knowing when to call a professional can prevent long-term issues. Look out for:

Increased dust on surfaces.

Unexplained allergies or asthma flare-ups.

Higher energy bills without usage changes.

Visible microbial growth around vents.

Strange odors coming from HVAC vents.

Uneven heating or cooling across rooms.

Choose the Right HVAC Company in White Plains, NY, for the Job

Not all duct cleaning services are created equal. Selecting a professional with proper certification and local expertise ensures thorough results.
If you're dealing with hot and cold spots around your home or feel like you're wasting energy heating empty rooms, you're not alone. Many homeowners in Stamford, CT, face the same frustration, trying to keep every room comfortable without watching their energy bills climb. That’s where ductless multi-split systems come in. They offer an easy, efficient way to create HVAC zoning that gives you more control over your home’s climate. Here's how they work and why they're a smart choice.

What Is HVAC Zoning—and Why Should You Care?

HVAC zoning lets you control the temperature in different areas or "zones" of your home separately. Want your upstairs cooler than the downstairs? Prefer not to heat that guest room no one's using? Zoning gives you the flexibility to do exactly that, boosting both comfort and efficiency.

Traditional zoning often involves ductwork, dampers, and multiple thermostats. While it works, it's not always simple or budget-friendly to install. That’s why ductless multi-split systems are such a game-changer. They offer the same benefits, without the hassle.

How Ductless Multi-Splits Work

Think of a ductless system as a customizable comfort network. It includes one outdoor condenser connected to several indoor units, each installed in a different room or zone. Every unit has its own remote or thermostat, so you can set the temperature independently in each space.

No ducts mean no major construction and no energy lost through leaky airways. It’s a clean, streamlined solution that’s ideal for targeted climate control.

Why Homeowners Love Ductless Zoning

When you zone your home with a ductless system, you get:

Personalized Comfort: Set the perfect temperature in every room based on who's using it.

Energy Savings: Only heat or cool the areas you actually use—no energy wasted on empty rooms.

Peace and Quiet: These systems are whisper-quiet, perfect for bedrooms, nurseries, or home offices.

Flexible Setup: Whether you want wall-mounted units, ceiling cassettes, or floor-standing models, there’s an option to suit your space.

They’re especially useful in homes with tricky layouts, hard-to-reach areas, or rooms that never seem to feel quite right with traditional systems.

Perfect for Stamford’s Diverse Home Styles

From older homes with uneven insulation to newer builds with added sunrooms or basements, ductless zoning fits right in. It’s ideal for split-level homes, finished attics, in-law suites, and other spaces where extending ductwork would be a challenge, or just not worth the cost.

You can even use ductless systems to enhance comfort in home additions that weren’t part of the original HVAC plan.

The Key: Professional Installation

To get the best results, installation really matters. Each indoor unit needs to be correctly sized and strategically placed to deliver optimal performance. A poor setup can lead to reduced efficiency or uneven temperatures.

That’s why it’s smart to work with a team like Acosta Air Pro. Our experienced professionals take the time to evaluate your home's layout, insulation, and daily usage to design a ductless system that perfectly suits your needs.

Ready for a More Comfortable Home?

Whether you’re tired of temperature swings or planning an addition, ductless zoning is an innovative, energy-efficient way to upgrade your comfort. At Acosta Air Pro, we specialize in ductless multi-split installations and can help you find the perfect setup for your Stamford, CT home.

Get in touch with our team today to explore your options. We'll guide you through every step—from choosing the right system to a smooth, professional install.

Indoor air quality is becoming an increasingly important topic—especially in modern, well-sealed homes like many found in White Plains, NY. While these energy-efficient builds are great for lowering utility costs, they can also trap pollutants and restrict fresh airflow. In this post, we’ll go over some telltale signs that your home might be in need of a whole-house ventilator.

That Stale or Musty Smell Indoors

When the air inside your home regularly feels stuffy or carries a musty odor, it’s often a red flag that ventilation isn’t cutting it. Without a proper way to circulate air, things like cooking smells, cleaning products, and general dust tend to hang around longer than they should. A whole-home ventilator helps by pulling in fresh outdoor air and flushing out the old, giving your entire home a breath of fresh air.

Too Much Humidity—or Not Enough

Keeping humidity levels balanced is key for comfort, and ventilation plays a big role here. If your home feels sticky in the summer or bone-dry during the winter, that imbalance might be due to poor air exchange. High humidity can warp wood and invite mold, while overly dry air can crack flooring and furniture. A whole-home ventilator helps maintain a more consistent, comfortable indoor climate year-round.

Worsening Allergies or Asthma

Frequent allergy symptoms or asthma flare-ups could be linked to poor air circulation. When airflow is limited, things like pet dander, dust, and even pollen can accumulate indoors. Whole-home ventilators work with your HVAC system to keep the air moving and filter out these particles—making it easier to breathe, especially for those with sensitivities.

Condensation Building Up on Windows

If you’re noticing foggy windows—particularly during colder weather—it might be due to too much indoor moisture and not enough ventilation. Excess humidity can damage window frames and create the perfect environment for mold growth. With a ventilator in place, fresh air flows in while damp air is pushed out, helping to reduce condensation and protect your home.

Heavy Use of Exhaust Fans

Always flipping on the bathroom or kitchen fan just to keep things bearable? While these fans help, they’re more of a quick fix than a lasting solution. A whole-house ventilator offers a set-it-and-forget-it approach, circulating fresh air automatically so your space stays comfortable without constant fan use.

Time to Take a Deep Breath

If any of these issues sound familiar, it might be the right moment to look into a whole-home ventilator for your White Plains, NY home. This investment can enhance comfort, improve your indoor air quality, and even support your HVAC system’s performance.
During the colder months in Mamaroneck, NY, the air inside your home can feel unusually dry. If you’ve noticed your skin feels tight, or breathing just isn’t as easy—even with the heat cranked up—low humidity might be the real issue. That’s where a whole-home humidifier can make a huge difference. In this article, we’ll unpack how these systems work and why they’re a smart upgrade for your indoor comfort.

What Exactly Is a Whole-Home Humidifier?

Unlike small, portable units that only tackle one room at a time, whole-home humidifiers are built right into your HVAC system. They send moisture through your home’s ductwork, so every room benefits from balanced humidity levels.

Because they’re integrated with your heating and cooling system, there’s no need for constant refilling or adjusting. Just set it and let it quietly do its thing in the background.

Why Balanced Humidity Really Matters

Keeping your indoor humidity between 30% and 50% can make a world of difference. When the air’s too dry, you might deal with everything from dry, itchy skin to sinus flare-ups and allergy trouble. A whole-home humidifier helps ease those issues by keeping moisture levels steady.

But it’s not just about how you feel—your home benefits too. Dry air can damage wood furniture, floors, and even musical instruments. Proper humidity helps protect them and can even make your space feel warmer without turning up the heat, which might help lower your energy bills.

How to Tell If Your Home Needs One

Shocks from static or constantly dry, irritated skin

Wood floors or furniture starting to crack

Ongoing dry throat or stuffy nose

Worsening allergy or asthma symptoms

Noticing small gaps between floorboards

If any of that sounds familiar, it might be time to take a closer look at your home’s humidity levels.

How It Works with Your HVAC

A whole-home humidifier is usually installed near your furnace or air handler. As your HVAC system runs, the humidifier adds moisture to the air before it’s pushed through the ducts.

When installed by a pro, it’s sized and calibrated to match your home’s needs. You can even connect it to your thermostat, making it easy to keep tabs on your humidity levels.

Keeping It in Good Shape

To get the most out of your humidifier, swap out the water panel once per season. Keep an eye out for mineral deposits and clean the parts now and then, as your manual suggests.

It’s wise to have your HVAC technician take a look during your usual system checkups. That way, you can catch any issues early and make sure everything's running as it should.

A dependable heating system is essential for home comfort, especially when temperatures drop. However, like any mechanical system, it won’t last forever. Over time, wear and tear take their toll, leading to inefficiencies and potential breakdowns. Spotting the warning signs early can help you avoid expensive repairs—or worse, getting stuck without heat on a freezing day. Here are the key indicators that your heating system might be on its last leg.

1. Strange Noises Coming from Your System

A well-functioning heating system should run smoothly with a soft hum. If you start hearing loud bangs, rattles, screeches, or grinding noises, it could signal serious internal problems, such as:

Loose or damaged components

A failing blower motor

A cracked heat exchanger (which can be hazardous)

If your system is making unusual noises, it’s time to call a professional.

2. Unexplained Spikes in Energy Bills

Noticing a steady increase in your heating bill without any change in usage? That’s often a sign your system is losing efficiency. As heating systems age, they need to work harder to produce the same level of warmth, leading to higher energy consumption. Common causes include:

Worn-out parts

Clogged filters

An outdated system that no longer meets modern efficiency standards

3. Uneven Heating Throughout Your Home

Are some rooms uncomfortably warm while others remain chilly? Uneven heating can indicate:

A failing blower system

Blockages or leaks in your ductwork

An aging unit struggling to distribute heat evenly

If adjusting your thermostat doesn’t fix the issue, your heating system may be on its way out.

4. Frequent Repairs & Short Cycling

A well-maintained heating system shouldn’t require constant repairs. If you’re calling for service multiple times in a short span, it may be more cost-effective to invest in a replacement rather than continuing to patch up an aging unit.

Another red flag is short cycling, where your system turns on and off too frequently. This can be caused by:

A faulty thermostat

Overheating due to a clogged filter

A system that’s too large or too outdated for your home

5. Poor Air Quality & Excess Dust

Older heating systems often fail to filter air properly, leading to an increase in dust, allergens, and dry indoor air. If you’ve noticed:

More airborne particles

Worsening allergies

Persistent dry skin and throat irritation

It could be due to your aging system. Upgrading to a newer model with advanced filtration can significantly improve indoor air quality.

6. Your System Is 15-20 Years Old

Most heating systems have a lifespan of about 15 to 20 years, depending on maintenance and usage. If your unit is approaching this age and showing signs of inefficiency, now is the time to start planning for a replacement. Modern heating systems are far more energy-efficient, meaning an upgrade could help you save on utility bills while improving comfort.

7. A Yellow or Flickering Pilot Light

If you have a gas-powered heating system, keep an eye on the pilot light. A healthy flame should burn blue—a yellow or flickering flame could signal:

The presence of carbon monoxide

Incomplete combustion

A clogged or dirty burner

Carbon monoxide is a serious, odorless threat that can be deadly. If you notice a yellow flame, shut off the system immediately and contact a professional.

Is It Time to Replace Your Heating System?

If you’ve noticed any of these warning signs, don’t wait for a complete breakdown. A failing heating system could leave you without warmth when you need it most. At Acosta Air Pro, we specialize in heating system inspections, repairs, and replacements to keep your home comfortable and safe. Schedule an inspection today to determine whether a repair or replacement is the best solution for your home.

Heat pumps have become a popular heating and cooling solution for homeowners. While they work well in moderate climates, many people in Mamaroneck, NY wonder if they can handle harsh winters. Understanding their performance in cold weather is key when considering an upgrade.

How Heat Pumps Work

Unlike furnaces that burn fuel to create heat, heat pumps transfer warmth from the air or ground into your home. Even in freezing temperatures, modern heat pumps are designed to extract heat.

Can Heat Pumps Handle Cold Climates?

Advanced heat pump technology allows these systems to work effectively even in freezing temperatures. Many high-efficiency models adjust their output based on outdoor conditions, ensuring consistent warmth. In places like Mamaroneck, NY, where winter temperatures can drop significantly, choosing a cold-climate heat pump is essential. Some homeowners also pair their system with a backup heating source for added reliability.

Factors That Affect Heat Pump Performance

Several factors influence a heat pump’s efficiency in cold weather:

Outdoor Temperature: The colder it gets, the harder a heat pump must work. Advanced models are built to handle extreme conditions.

Home Insulation: Proper insulation helps retain heat, reducing strain on the system.

Backup Heating: Some systems include auxiliary heating or can be paired with a furnace for added warmth.

Regular Maintenance: Keeping your heat pump clean and well-maintained ensures it runs at peak efficiency.

Maximizing Heat Pump Efficiency in Winter

For homeowners in Mamaroneck, NY, optimizing heat pump performance is key during colder months. Here are a few tips:

Schedule regular maintenance: This ensures it works at its optimal performance.

Keep indoor vents open and unobstructed: This allows for proper airflow throughout your home.

Clear snow and debris: Keeping the outdoor unit clean and unobscured helps maintain airflow.

Seal air leaks: Making sure that your windows and doors are sealed helps prevent heat loss.

Is a Heat Pump Right for Your Home?

Upgrading to a heat pump can improve indoor comfort while lowering energy costs. These systems operate quietly, provide consistent heating and cooling. For homes in Mamaroneck, NY, investing in a heat pump ensures reliable performance even in colder months.

What Is a Two-Stage Furnace?

Two-stage furnaces are more efficient and provide greater comfort than single-stage furnaces. Traditional furnaces are either off, or they run at full power. Two-stage furnaces automatically adjust their output between a high setting and a low setting depending on how much heat is required. This helps to improve your home’s energy efficiency because your furnace doesn’t always have to stay on high.

How Does Can a Two-Stage Furnace Achieve Save You Money?

On average, two-stage furnaces use considerably less energy than single-stage models. This means you’ll likely spend significantly less money on your monthly energy bill. Because your furnace doesn’t have to work as hard to achieve the correct temperature level, you’ll also likely experience fewer repair issues.

When a furnace can only operate at one speed, it has to cycle on and off more frequently. This causes added stress on the system. Over time, this can increase the likelihood of a breakdown and greatly impact your furnace's longevity.

Prepare Your Home for Winter

In addition to providing more consistent comfort, two-stage furnaces can potentially help improve indoor air quality. This is because these systems stay on for longer periods, meaning more air passes through the furnace’s filtration system. This allows the filter to catch more airborne pollutants, possibly leading to fewer allergy issues and respiratory infections.

By investing in professional heating installation services, you can improve your household’s energy efficiency and comfort level. To learn more about two-stage furnaces, reach out to the experts at Acosta Air Pro today.

Among several other goals, the 2022 Inflation Reduction Act aims to help reduce everyday living costs for homeowners across the United States. The initiative features a variety of valuable energy efficiency incentives, but what can you do to get in on the action?

Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit

Initially scheduled to expire in 2022, the Energy Efficient Home Improvement Tax Credit has instead been revived and extended. Under the Inflation Reduction Act, this incentive — also known as the 25C program — will remain active through 2032. To eliminate any eligibility gaps, the extension was also made retroactive to January 1, 2022.

The popular 25C program provides substantial tax credits to households that install certain high-efficiency equipment. This includes up to $600 for qualifying air conditioners and gas furnaces, with an annual cap of $1,200 per household. The yearly cap even increases to $2,000 when you install a qualifying heat pump, boiler, or heat pump water heater. However, the program’s stringent efficiency standards can significantly limit your options.

High-Efficiency Electric Home Rebate Program

If you’ve ever considered purchasing a heat pump for your home, now may be the perfect time to strike. The Inflation Reduction Act has appropriated $4.5 billion to fund the High-Efficiency Electric Home Rebate Program (HEEHRP). This program provides tremendous incentives to homeowners who install Energy Star-certified heat pumps.

If your household falls below 80% of the median local income, you may be able to recoup the entire cost of your system. Households that fall between 80% and 150% of the median income can still receive a 50% rebate through the HEEHRP. The program can also provide additional rebates to help upgrade your home’s wiring, electrical service panel, and insulation.

Home Owner Managing Energy Savings Program

Despite its clunky name, the Home Owner Managing Energy Savings (HOMES) Program promises to deliver serious savings for savvy homeowners. The program includes rebates covering a broad range of retrofits and home improvements that reduce household energy consumption. This includes heating and cooling systems, water heaters, insulation, air, and duct sealing, home energy audits, and more.

To qualify for rebates up to $2,000, your improvements must demonstrate energy savings of at least 20%. Saving more energy will earn you a larger rebate, up to a maximum of $8,000, for a 50% reduction in energy consumption. Be aware, however, that these rebates cannot be combined with other federal efficiency incentives.

The bottom line is that the Inflation Reduction Act has made investing in energy-efficient equipment incredibly appealing for homeowners. If you’re tired of paying high energy bills, talk to your local HVAC contractor about how rebates and incentives can help you save now and in the future.

The U.S. Department of Energy is about to enforce new SEER standards for HVAC systems, but what does that mean for you? To make sense of it all, let’s break down exactly what’s changing and what effects you can expect to see.

How SEER Measures Energy Efficiency

It might sound straightforward, but measuring the efficiency of air conditioners and air-source heat pumps is surprisingly complicated. Among other issues, system performance may vary considerably depending on the weather conditions at any given time. Think of it like measuring the fuel economy of a vehicle on a wide-open highway versus sitting in rush hour traffic.

To solve this problem, Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER) calculates a system’s performance across an entire season. This produces a single number that serves as a simple, convenient reference for comparing the efficiency of different units. In essence, a higher SEER rating means less energy used and less money spent on cooling.

Demystifying the New SEER2 Mandates

For decades, the Department of Energy has enforced minimum efficiency standards for all new cooling systems. Heat pumps and AC systems in the North require a SEER rating of at least 13. In the South and Southwest, the current standard is 14 SEER. However, as of January 1, 2023, these minimum standards will increase by one for most systems.

This update is part of a broader “SEER2” initiative that features new testing procedures. The new SEER2 protocols are designed to better reflect real-world conditions, thus producing more accurate efficiency data. On average, a current rating of 14 SEER will compare to a SEER2 rating of approximately 13.4.

What This All Means for Homeowners

Since prices typically increase in line with efficiency, it will likely cost more to install new HVAC systems beginning in January. However, you won’t be required to replace existing equipment that falls below the new SEER2 standards. In addition, any added equipment costs may be offset over time by the resulting savings on energy bills.

Another key change coming in 2023 is the phase-out of R-410A refrigerant. This refrigerant will no longer be used in newer models but is still common in many current air conditioning units. Once again, the good news is that existing systems need not be replaced to comply with the new regulations. Nonetheless, if you currently have an R-410A system, it may be time to start planning for an eventual equipment upgrade.

The 2023 SEER2 mandates mark an important shift in the HVAC industry, but homeowners have no cause for alarm. While the cost of new AC and heat pump systems may increase, the corresponding jump in efficiency should be great news for all.

A modest bathroom redesign might involve little more than painting walls or tiling a limited area of floor, wall, or countertop. The most extensive bathroom remodel includes possibly replacing the tub, toilet, sink, plumbing and electricity. Tearing out all fixtures, down to the studs, offers a clean slate upon which to work. Gut renovation may take time because the subsequent installation involves piecing together many disparate parts. One way to reduce the time needed and the complexity of making many different parts come together is to deploy Schluter-Systems as a main component in your project. Standardized, high-quality building pieces are easy to interconnect and customize to offer an inherently waterproof installation. The major building blocks of the Schluter System are:

Kerdi-Board – goes beyond the best attributes of sheet rock and backer board

Ditra – think carpet padding underlayment, but waterproof

Ditra Heat – radiant heat system

Kerdi-Drain, Kerdi-Line, Schluter Shower – keeps water where you want it

Pre-fabricated pieces such as Schluter Niche and Schluter Bench – design options galore

Finishing, fastening, or connecting pieces - to pull it all together

Used individually or collectively, Schluter System components are ideal for mitigating water and vapor penetration for tile installations and bathroom remodeling.

SCHLUTER KERDI-BOARD

For decades, pressed gypsum board called “sheet rock” has been used to construct walls due to being lightweight and easy to cut. However, for walls in areas that need to withstand water or floors that are load bearing, “backer board” made with cement, is the go-to sub-surface. The Schluter-Kerdi-Board combines the best attributes of these two standards and more:

Flat

Stable

Lightweight

Easy To Cut

Waterproof

Load Bearing

Insulated

Grid Lines Standard on the Outer Laminate Surface Facilitates Straight Cuts and Measurements

The foam in-between the laminate ranges in thickness from 3/16th of an inch up to 2 inches. All told, this level, plumb and square surface protects from moisture and provides an excellent substrate for tiling. To accommodate curvilinear contours to room dimensions and fixtures, there are sensible variations to the standard flat panel. Designated by the letters U, E, and V there are specialty panels made to fit around pipes, create 90º corners without wood, or to create curves for rounded surfaces, respectively. The Kerdi-Board can be used on masonry wall or attached to wood framing. Cutting ease and sturdiness facilitate custom designs for:

Schluter-Ditra & Other Waterproofing Options

This waffle design of the Schluter-Ditra underlayment offers the benefits of load distribution, vapor management, and waterproofing. Although only 1/8” of an inch thick, it is strong enough to support weight while protecting the subfloor from moisture. In addition to eliminating the main cause of cracked tile, the low profile allows for an easy transition to adjoining floor surfaces. Schluter-Ditra is easy to cut and install. Pieces can be fitted together. To ensure waterproofing and to allow for expansion and contraction, there are guidelines for sealing connecting points as well as leaving space between differing surfaces, such as floors and walls.

Schluter-Ditra-Heat

Subject to local building code, a radiant heat floor can add warming creature comfort to any room. Schluter-Ditra-Heat begins with a floor mat of evenly sized and spaced octagonal shapes. Then a heating cable connected to a thermostat is interspersed throughout the membrane, subject to spacing guidelines. This flooring membrane is designed to uncouple the substrate from tile surfaces, thereby serving as a moisture barrier, allowing expansion and contraction, safeguarding against cracked tiles, and can optionally have sound proofing added. All installation must still adhere to standard building protocols such as being level with the proper pitch towards any central drain or drain line.

Schluter Shower System, Kerdi-Drain & Kerdi-Line

The ShcluterKerdi SHOWER kit is a waterproofing system, vapor-tight assembly.

The kit includes Kerdi waterproofing membrane to protect walls. Kerdi-band waterproofing strips seal all seams and connections. Kerdi-Seal-PS and Kerdi-Seal MV seal pipes and valve protrusions. Kerdi-Shower-T, TS, and TT are sloped shower boards pitched to lead to a Kerdi-Drain (center and circular) or Kerdi-Line (rectangular and placed along a wall, corner, or shower edge) for drainage. These components interconnect with the purpose of being sealed and waterproofed for tiled showers. All building standards of having level surfaces and adequate pitching apply accordingly.

Prefabricated Schluter Pieces – Benches, Niches, Shelves And Curb

Increasingly there are broadly applicable design conveniences that can be deployed to upgrade a bathroom. A niche in the shower for soaps and shampoos simultaneously provides storage and functionality.

Corner or wall shelves can be used for decorative or organizational purposes. A shower bench can provide a seating option for the elderly or injured. It can also serve as another way to luxuriate with steam. Tape, thin set, and mortar can be applied, at joints of connecting pieces or directional changes in surfaces, to address moisture, waterproofing and drainage accordingly. The modular nature of Schluter System supports making custom pieces, particularly for small spaces which require unique solutions. These pre-fabricated pieces provide for additional design options for the aesthetics and usefulness of your space with the added benefit of speeding up installation.

Schluter Finishing, Fastening, Connecting Pieces & Accessories

The Schluter System should be paired with attachment hardware that is purposefully designed for sealing and waterproofing. Screws, anchors and washers are made of galvanized steel. The anchors are suitable for masonry wall applications. The washers have pointed tabs to hold in place against Kerdi-Board to facilitate steady driving of the screws through to wooden studs. Perforated profiles made of brushed stainless steel or flat plastic are adhered to counter tops, vanities, or partition walls for a smooth finish and added support.
